    In October 2012, Mayor Barbara Bass and members of the Fit City Challenge coalition announced the launch of Lighten Up East Texas, a regional weight loss contest, during a press conference at Tyler City Hall.

    The incentives for the contest include a 2013 Dodge Dart, provided by Allen Samuels Dodge. Participants will also have chances to win fitness packages, trips, hotel stays and Brookshire’s gift cards.

  • Texas is 10th most obese state

    Texas moved up the ladder to become the 10th most obese state – tied with Kentucky – while all states are projected to have obesity rates exceeding 44 percent by the year 2030, according to the annual report, ” F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2012.” The report is compiled each year by Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, both nonprofit organizations charged with examining solutions to the country’s health problems.

  • 5-2-1-0 campaign

    The Fit City 5210 campaign is based on a program developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It emphasizes daily consumption of five servings of fruits and vegetables, less than two hours of recreational screen time, at least one hour of physical activity and zero sweetened beverages.

    The program is a healthy-living initiative that has been integrated within the curricula of the Tyler and Whitehouse school districts (grades 3 - 11).
